Murang’a Woman Rep Accuses Gachagua of Contradicting Himself Over Church Attack: “Which Is Which?”

Murang’a County Woman Representative Betty Maina has accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of issuing contradictory statements over the chaotic incident that occurred at Witima ACK Church last week.

In a social media post on Friday, January 30, the Murang’a Woman Rep claimed Gachagua had shifted his account of what transpired.

According Betty Maina, Gachagua had initially claimed he had been attacked by goons allegedly acting under the command of her bodyguards during the church service. However, the ex-DP later changed course and blamed a group of 12 police officers from Nairobi.

The Woman Representative argued that the changing versions risk confusing investigators tasked with establishing what transpired during the church event and determining accountability for disorder witnessed there last week.

Despite the alleged flip-flopping by the DCP party leader, Maina reiterated her intention to pursue legal action. She insisted that the initial allegations by Gachagua had unfairly implicated her and harmed her public standing within Murang’a County politics and national discourse.

The remarks by Betty Maina came after Gachagua led a group of united opposition leaders on Friday to the office of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to formally lodge complaints over the chaotic scenes witnessed in Othaya, Nyeri, last Sunday.

After meeting IG Kanja, the former deputy president alleged that a covert 12-member police unit was responsible for the attack on him and his allies. He said he had asked the Inspector General to ensure the officers were arrested and charged.

Gachagua warned that failure to take action would trigger nationwide demonstrations by February 16.
