Kenya is mourning the loss of former MP and veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a road accident near Naivasha early this morning.
The fatal crash has sent shockwaves through the political community, cutting short the life of a well-known figure whose career spanned decades. Details of the accident remain under police investigation.
Jirongo’s passing leaves behind an extensive and grieving family. A polygamist, he was married to four wives from different communities, reflecting a personal life that crossed tribal lines.
His spouses were Joan Chemutai Kimeto (Kalenjin, first wife, divorced), Christine Nyokabi Kimani (Agikuyu), Anne Kanini (Kamba), and Anne Lanoi Pertet (Maasai).
From these unions, he fathered a large number of children. Publicly known siblings include Ruby, Leon, Tanya Nyambura, Nicole, Claudia Khalamwa, Sharon, Timothy, Sonia, June Injete, Judy Khalamwa, Kimani Waiyaki, Naisenya Waiyaki, Lemaiyan Waiyaki, Prestone, and Mercy Jirongo.
The family had already endured tragedy this year with the death of Jirongo’s daughter, Lorraine Elizabeth Khalamwa Jelagat Jirongo, in 2025.
She left behind three children: Jabari, Michaela, and Aria Jebaibai Berur.
As the nation comes to terms with the sudden news, condolences are pouring in for a family that has lost its patriarch.
Jirongo’s complex legacy, marked by his political influence and his distinctly Kenyan, multi-faceted family, will be remembered by many.
The focus now turns to supporting his large, bereaved household.
