I was alone: Fuel Station Attendant Recalls hard Times Trying to Save Jirongo From Fatal Accident

Nairobi residents were left in shock over the weekend as details emerged surrounding the tragic death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.

The fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 13, along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway near Karai, Naivasha.

According to a petrol station attendant who served Jirongo moments before the crash, the former politician arrived at Eagle Petrol Station around 2:15 am driving his white Mercedes-Benz.

Jirongo briefly stopped at the station but did not refuel, quickly turning back onto the highway.

Witnesses say that shortly after rejoining traffic, he drove into a lane designated for oncoming vehicles, causing a head-on collision with a bus belonging to Climax Company.

The attendant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described a harrowing scene. He rushed to the car but found the doors locked and Jirongo slumped over the steering wheel, with blood visible on his head.

Emergency services were contacted at 2:37 am, and by the time additional assistance arrived, it was already too late.

The bus driver, Tirus Kamau, confirmed that Jirongo attempted to overtake another vehicle and veered into the wrong lane, resulting in the collision.

Police authorities, including Rift Valley Regional Traffic Commander Sara Chumo, have launched an investigation.

Both the Mercedes-Benz and the bus have been impounded at Naivasha Police Station.

Preliminary reports also mention unconfirmed speculation that Jirongo may have had a firearm in the car, though none was recovered at the scene.

Jirongo was a prominent figure in Kenyan politics, having led the Youth for KANU ’92 movement and serving multiple terms as Lugari MP.

He also ran for president in 2017 and briefly held a Cabinet post as Minister for Rural Development.

His sudden death marks the end of a controversial yet influential career, leaving many Kenyans reflecting on the tragedy that unfolded in the early hours of a quiet Saturday.
