Sifuna Reveals He Offered to Resign Amid ODM Power Struggle After Raila’s Death

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has shed light on internal wrangles within the party, revealing that he once offered to step down from his position in a bid to ease tensions with deputy party leader Oburu Oginga.

Speaking during a radio interview on Thursday, April 30, Sifuna disclosed that disagreements within the party intensified following the death of ODM leader Raila Odinga, triggering a difficult transition period at the top leadership.

According to Sifuna, the fallout stemmed from differing interpretations of the party’s constitution and how leadership roles should function in the absence of Raila.

He maintained that ODM must strictly follow its internal rules to ensure stability and continuity.

The Nairobi senator recounted a tense meeting at the party’s headquarters, Chungwa House, where he confronted Oburu over public remarks suggesting that he could be removed from his role as secretary general.

Sifuna linked the dispute to an earlier chaotic meeting in Kakamega, where he was initially targeted by a hostile crowd.

He claimed the situation later shifted, and Oburu became the subject of criticism, further straining relations within the party.

Despite the tensions, Sifuna said Oburu denied organizing any disruptions and expressed willingness to work together during the transition period.

However, the situation prompted Sifuna to make a bold offer in an attempt to restore unity.

“I told him if my presence was causing discomfort, I was ready to resign and allow him to choose someone he could work with as secretary general,” Sifuna revealed, adding that his priority was the stability of the party rather than holding onto power.

He emphasized that ODM remains one of Raila Odinga’s most significant political legacies and should not be weakened by leadership disputes.

Instead, he called for unity and commitment among party members to ensure its long-term survival.

Sifuna also addressed ongoing speculation about ODM’s political direction, insisting that the party has not made any formal decision to support President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

He argued that any claims suggesting ODM has endorsed Ruto’s re-election bid are misleading, maintaining that such a position would only be determined through official party structures.

Political analysts say the revelations highlight deep-rooted divisions within ODM at a critical time when the party is trying to reorganize following the loss of its longtime leader.
