Three Arrested Over Suspected Fuel Siphoning at Sultan Hamud Station

Police have arrested three people suspected of siphoning fuel from train wagons at Sultan Hamud Railway Station in Makueni County following a coordinated security operation triggered by a public tip-off.

Authorities said the suspects were apprehended at the scene after members of the public alerted law enforcement to suspicious activity at the station.

Kenya Railways officials working alongside Port Police responded to the alert and disrupted the operation before the suspects could flee or dispose of the fuel.

During the raid, officers recovered several containers believed to contain petrol siphoned directly from stationary train wagons.

The seized items included two 20-litre jerrycans and two 18-litre water dispenser bottles, which were taken as exhibits.

Investigators said the suspects appear to have exploited a lapse in supervision while the locomotive was temporarily stationed at Sultan Hamud as it awaited a replacement driver.

The three suspects were escorted to Emali Railways Police Station, where they are being held as investigations continue.

Police said the suspects will be arraigned in court once the case file is completed.

Authorities are also probing whether the suspects are linked to a broader fuel theft network and where the siphoned fuel was intended to be sold or transported.

Fuel theft along transport corridors and industrial facilities has increasingly drawn concern from security agencies due to its association with organised crime, revenue losses and risks to public safety.

In a statement, the National Police Service reiterated its commitment to combating fuel theft and economic sabotage, noting that cooperation between the public and security agencies was critical to the successful operation.

“The National Police Service remains firmly committed to combating fuel theft and all forms of economic sabotage through sustained vigilance, swift action and strong public partnership,” the statement said.

Kenya Railways has previously raised alarm over vandalism, cargo pilferage and interference with railway infrastructure, warning that such incidents undermine operational efficiency and investor confidence in rail transport.

The arrests have renewed attention on security challenges within the transport sector, as police intensify efforts to curb theft and protect critical infrastructure.
