The dispute has stirred political debates, with both leaders insisting on their roles in the project.

On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, President Ruto said the road project was actually started after he and former President Uhuru Kenyatta assumed office in 2013.
He insisted that records and evidence clearly show the road’s construction took place under their administration.
“He claims he launched the road from Kibwezi to Mbondoni. Let me clarify—there are no fools in Kenya. That road was built during Uhuru and my tenure. We have the facts,” Ruto said.
The President also criticized Kalonzo over remarks about his political experience. Kalonzo had corrected Ruto, stating that his political career spans 40 years, not 50 as the President suggested. Ruto, however, used the opportunity to question the former Vice President’s achievements.
“Forty years or fifty, my friend, you haven’t done much. How many years does one need to plan a road to their home? In four decades, what have you achieved?” Ruto asked.
Kalonzo had earlier said that while serving as Vice President, he commissioned the road construction through the Chinese company Sinohydro.

According to him, the project covered Kibwezi, Mutomo, Kitui, Mwingi, Tseikuru, and Maua, creating a major transport link connecting Ethiopia with the Mombasa port.
“When I was Vice President, I launched the construction with Sinohydro. I want Ruto to deny this,” Kalonzo stated.

His statement came after Ruto had pointed out that despite Kalonzo’s long political career, the road leading to his home in Tseikuru remained dusty and unfinished.
