Speaker of South Sudan Rushed to Nairobi Amid Reports of Collapsing

Nairobi has become the temporary destination for South Sudan’s Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA), Jemma Nunu Kumba, who is currently in the city for medical check-ups.

This comes after widespread social media reports claimed that she had collapsed in her office and was urgently flown abroad for treatment.

The Speaker’s Office moved swiftly to clarify the situation, describing the rumours as false and misleading. In an official statement issued on February 25, 2026, the office emphasized that the visit to Nairobi is part of a planned medical routine and not an emergency.

“We wish to clarify that the Rt. Hon. Speaker is currently in Nairobi for a medical check-up. This is a standard health practice, not an emergency,” the statement read.

Officials further confirmed that Speaker Nunu Kumba remains in good health, maintaining high spirits throughout her stay. She is expected to resume her official duties once her medical assessments are completed.

The clarification sought to quell concerns over the stability of South Sudan’s legislative leadership, which is a critical component of the 2018 peace agreement designed to foster national unity and end years of civil conflict.

The misinformation, officials noted, sparked unnecessary public concern and political speculation. The Speaker’s Office warned that unverified reports regarding the health of national leaders could erode public confidence in institutions and create undue panic.

“Irresponsible reporting and politically charged insinuations not only mislead the public but also risk undermining confidence in national institutions,” the statement added.

This incident follows similar false claims two weeks ago regarding the health of Jonglei State Governor Riek Gai Kok, who was also alleged to have died while receiving treatment in Nairobi. Authorities had dismissed those reports as baseless.

The Speaker’s presence in Nairobi underscores the importance of responsible reporting and verification in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly online.

Leaders in South Sudan and the region continue to call on the public and media outlets to exercise caution, particularly when circulating information about high-profile figures.

Jemma Nunu Kumba’s routine medical trip, although minor, has highlighted the delicate balance between public interest and the need to respect accurate reporting.

Officials urge citizens to confirm facts before sharing news, ensuring that leaders’ reputations and institutional credibility are protected.
