AUC Chairperson Congratulates Museveni on Re-election Victory

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on winning Uganda’s presidential election, describing the polls as an important democratic exercise for the country.

In a statement released from Addis Ababa on January 17, 2026, Youssouf commended the conduct of the elections held on January 15, noting that the process reflected Uganda’s continued commitment to constitutional governance and electoral practice.

President Museveni was declared the winner after garnering 71.61 per cent of the votes cast, securing another term in office.

The African Union said the elections demonstrated meaningful citizen participation and underscored the role of democratic institutions in sustaining stability and development.

The AUC Chairperson acknowledged the contribution of both continental and regional election observers deployed during the electoral period.

Special praise was extended to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for his leadership of the Joint African Union–COMESA–IGAD Election Observation Mission to Uganda.

Youssouf described Jonathan’s role as instrumental in coordinating observer efforts and engaging with key stakeholders throughout the process.

According to the AU, the joint mission assessed the overall conduct of the elections and worked closely with electoral authorities, political actors and civil society groups.

The mission brought together observers from across Africa and the region to promote transparency and accountability.

The AUC Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union Commission’s commitment to advancing democratic governance across the continent, saying the Commission would continue supporting member states in strengthening democratic institutions and effective leadership.

He also applauded Ugandans for taking part in the electoral process, praising citizens for their commitment to peace, security and democratic consolidation.

The statement emphasized that democratic stability remains a core pillar of the African Union’s agenda, adding that credible elections and active public participation are essential for sustainable peace and development across member states.

The announcement was issued by the African Union Commission’s Information and Communication Directorate, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The AU said it remains engaged with Uganda and other African countries in promoting democratic values, institutional governance and regional stability.

The statement adds to growing regional and international reactions following the conclusion of Uganda’s presidential election, which returned President Museveni to office for another term.
