“I Saw the Car Coming”: Bus Driver Recounts Fatal Crash That Killed Cyrus Jirongo on Highway

The driver of the Climax Company bus involved in the fatal accident that claimed the life of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has broken his silence, stating that the tragic crash could have been avoided.

Tiras Kamau Githinji, 52, was driving the bus, which was carrying 65 passengers, when it was involved in a head-on collision with Jirongo’s vehicle along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in the Karai area at around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Speaking to TV47, Githinji recounted the tense moments leading up to the crash, saying he noticed Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz attempting to overtake a line of vehicles on the busy highway.

He explained that despite spotting the oncoming car early, he had limited options due to the fully loaded bus and the narrow stretch of road.

According to Githinji, the accident became inevitable when the overtaking maneuver failed.

He maintained that the collision could have been prevented if the former MP had abandoned the attempt and allowed the vehicles he was overtaking to pass.

He added that he tried to steer clear but was constrained by traffic and the condition of the road.

Police investigations confirmed that Jirongo was traveling from Nakuru towards Nairobi at the time of the incident.

Naivasha DCIO Isaac Kiama stated that the former legislator sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several passengers on the bus were injured and rushed to hospitals in Naivasha, where they received treatment.

While the severity of the injuries has not been fully disclosed, medical teams worked through the early hours to attend to the victims.

Jirongo’s body was taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital mortuary before being transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.

The 64-year-old politician, who served as Lugari MP and Minister for Rural Development under President Daniel arap Moi, is being mourned nationwide, as road safety advocates renew calls for stricter traffic enforcement on the highway.
