DCI Provides Update on Cyrus Jirongo’s Death Following CCTV Footage Review

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released fresh details regarding the tragic death of former Lugari Member of Parliament, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, after reviewing CCTV footage from the site of the accident.

According to the DCI, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 2:19 a.m. on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway and involved Hon. Jirongo’s vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz (registration KCZ 305U), and a Climax Company Ltd public service vehicle (PSV) bus (registration KCU 576A).

The crash resulted in a head-on collision, pushing Jirongo’s car about 25 metres from the impact site, while the PSV came to a stop roughly 50 metres away.
CCTV Footage Reveals Final Movements

Initial review of CCTV footage from the nearby Eagol Petrol Station showed that Jirongo drove into the station at 2:18:40 a.m. from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel.

At 2:19:10 a.m., he stopped at the station’s exit, and nine seconds later, he made a right turn back toward Nairobi. Moments later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the PSV bus collided head-on with his vehicle.

The PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had previously recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base, has been released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.

He is required to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for additional police action.

“The Mercedes was coming from a petrol station as I headed toward Busia from Nairobi. He didn’t give way. He got to the road and saw that his side was in a traffic jam. He decided to come to my lane, and we collided head-on,” Githinji reportedly said.

“I tried saving him, but I felt my bus would go down. I braked, and he rammed into the bus. I had not known who the person was, but when the police came, I learnt he was Cyrus Jirongo. I’m so sorry,” he added.

A multi-agency team, including homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory, was deployed to the scene.

Detectives have also interviewed the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant and are collecting statements from passengers aboard the bus and other witnesses.

Additional forensic analysis and site revisits are scheduled to reconstruct Jirongo’s final movements before the crash, including interactions at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

The DCI expressed condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of Hon. Jirongo and assured the public of its commitment to conducting a thorough, impartial, and credible investigation in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law.
