The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a 24-hour weather advisory warning of rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds across several parts of the country, urging residents to remain alert as conditions are expected to vary widely between regions.
According to the forecast released on Thursday, May 28, the affected areas include parts of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast region, and selected northeastern counties. The advisory is valid from 9pm Thursday to 9pm Friday, May 29.
Kenya Meteorological Department noted that counties within the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley region—including Kisumu, Kakamega, Siaya, Kisii, Kericho, Bungoma, Migori, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, and Narok—are likely to experience showers and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and night hours. Morning periods, however, are expected to be partly sunny in several areas.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi and surrounding counties such as Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, and Nyandarua, residents should expect mostly cloudy conditions in the morning, with sunny intervals later in the day. Isolated afternoon showers may also occur in some areas.
The Coast region, covering Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu, and Tana River counties, is expected to experience some of the heaviest rainfall during the forecast period, particularly in the morning hours. The weatherman has also warned of strong southerly winds affecting coastal areas.
In northeastern Kenya, Garissa is expected to receive enhanced rainfall activity, while other counties such as Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, and Isiolo will largely remain sunny but windy. Northwestern areas, including Turkana, are expected to stay dry but experience persistent strong winds.
Temperatures will vary significantly, with northern counties such as Mandera and Lodwar expected to reach highs of up to 37°C, while highland areas like Kericho and Eldoret will remain cooler, with temperatures dropping to around 12°C at night. Nairobi is expected to record temperatures ranging between 14°C and 25°C.
The department has urged residents in affected regions to take caution, especially where heavy rainfall and strong winds may disrupt transport, farming activities, and daily routines.
